In the week ending July 25, US steel material production reached 1.32 million short tons, down 28.5% year-on-year, but increased by 1.1% on a weekly basis.
US steel mills' capacity utilization was 58.9% in the week, down from 79.4% in the same period a year earlier, but slightly higher than 58.3% the previous week, according to AISI.
Since the beginning of this year (as of July 25), steel material production in the United States totaled 44.55 million short tons, down 20% year-on-year; the capacity utilization rate of steel mills was 66.1%, lower than 80.9% in the same period of last year.
In terms of regions, as of July 25, steel material production in the northeast of the United States was 133000 short tons; that of the Great Lakes region was 471000 short tons; that of the central and western regions was 129000 short tons; that of the southern region was 524000 short tons; and that of the western region was 63000 short tons.
According to the American Iron and Steel Association, in the first half of 2020, the United States imported 12.39 million short tons of steel material, down 20.8% year on year. During this period, the United States imported 1.12 million short tons of steel material from South Korea, a year-on-year decrease of 23%; 434000 short tons from Japan, a year-on-year decrease of 40%; 377000 short tons from Germany, a year-on-year decrease of 39%; 333000 short tons from Taiwan, a year-on-year decrease of 36%; and 323000 short tons from Turkey, with a year-on-year increase of 66%.
