Latin American Iron and Steel Association (Alacero) recently predicted that Latin America's ASTM A131 steel and so on steel materials imports will reach 23.5 million tons this year, down 6.5% from the same period last year; crude steel production will reach 66.3 million tons, up 3% from the same period last year.
Alacero expects Latin American ASTM A131 steel and so on steel materials demand to grow by 1.3% to 68.5 million tons in 2018, including 55.9 million tons of finished steel, an increase of 5.6% year-on-year. Imports account for about 34% of consumption.
In terms of countries, Alacero predicts that Argentina's crude steel production will increase by 18% in 2018, Mexico, Ecuador and Uruguay's crude steel production will increase by 4%, Venezuela's crude steel production will decrease by 61%, Chile by 8% and Colombia by 5%. According to the World Iron and Steel Association, crude steel production in South America was 3368,000 tons in the first nine months of this year, an increase of 2.5% over the same period last year. Among them, Argentina grew 16.1%, Brazil grew 2.5%, Ecuador grew 3.8%, Peru grew 2.5%, Uruguay grew 2.9%, Venezuela decreased 65.5%, Colombia decreased 12.8%, Paraguay decreased 8.1%, Chile decreased 4.8%.
Alacero also said that despite political instability and financial crisis in some countries in the region, as well as US trade tariffs and other factors, the overall situation of Latin America's ASTM A131 steel etc. steel industry in 2018 remained good.
