GL D32 shipbuilding steel plates have yield strength of 45,500 psi (315 MPa), and ultimate tensile strength of 64,000 - 85,000 psi (440-590 MPa). GL D32 plate tensile test on steel for ships cover structural steel plates, shapes, bars, and rivets for use in ship construction. Materials GL D32 tensile plate can be categorized as ordinary strength and higher strength. Germanischer Lloyd pertains to materials that shall conform to the required metallurgical structure which shall be evaluated by determining the average grain size. Mechanical properties such as elongation and toughness shall be evaluated using tension test and Charpy V-notch impact test. Germanischer Lloyd includes specifications on shapes and bars normally available as Grades A, A32, and A32. The maximum thickness of products furnished under the specification is 4 in. or 100 mm for plates and 2 in. or 50 mm for shapes and bars. When the steel is to be welded, it is presupposed that a welding procedure suitable for the grade of steel and intended use or service will be utilized in addition to the GL D32 plate tensile test.

GL D32 marine steel plates are structural steel for ships constructions. It is used for the main structural build including the hull and superstructure. Grade D32 shipbuilding steel plate is suitable for new builds or refits and can be found in large bulk carriers, container ships and passenger liners.
