42CrMo4 steel, similar to 1.7225, is a common chromium-molybdenum alloy steel accding to DIN standard. 1.7225 steel is under W-Nr Germany standard. DIN 42CrMo4 alloy steel bars are generally supplied hardened and tempered to Condition “T” in sections up to 100mm, with a tensile strength of 850 – 1000 MPa and aiming for this strength range in larger sections. DIN 42CrMo4/ 1.7225 alloy steel offers a very good balance of strength, toughness and wearresistance.
Properties:
The carbon content of 42CrMo4 bar is higher than 25CrMo4 steel. This material is usually used in the manufacture of forgings which require higher strength and heat treatment capabilities than 1.7218 steel. At the hardness of HRC18-22,DIN 1.7225 can be easily machined. 42CrMo4 alloy steel bar also has high hardenability and good toughness.
Welding:
DIN 42CrMo4 alloy steel bars are readily welded in the annealed condition but avoid when possible if hardened and tempered due to the effect on the mechanical properties. Welding in the nitrided, flame or induction hardened condition is not recommended.
