What is ABS grade A steel plate

ABS grade A steel plate is commonly used in shipbuilding with general strength. ABS grade A steel plate is mainly used to build ship body and hull structures. Generally speaking, air rolling and controlled rolling are feasible for ABS grade A steel plate with equal and less than 40 mm thickness. For ABS grade A steel plate with thickness greater than 40 mm, heat treatment is normalized or TMCP. These two processes can improve the yield strength and tensile point of ABS grade A steel plate.

ABS Grade A Steel Plate Chemical Composition
Grade The Element Max (%)
C Si Mn P S N
ABS grade A 0.21 0.50 2.5*C 0.035 0.035 0.02

Crack Sensitivity: Pcm = (C+Si/30+Mn/20+Cu/20+Ni/60+Cr/20+Mo/15+V/10+5B)%
Carbon Equivalent: Ceq =【C+Mn/6+(Cr+Mo+V)/5+(Ni+Cu)/15】%

ABS Grade A Steel Plate Property
Grade   Mechanical Property Charpy V Impact Test
Thickness Yield Tensile Elongation Degree Energy 1 Energy 2
ABS grade A mm Min Mpa Mpa Min % 20 J J
t≤50 235 400-520 18% - -
50<t≤70 235 400-520 18% 24 34
70<t≤100 235 400-520 18% 27 41
Note: Energy 1 is transverse impact test, Energy 2 is longitudinal

Generally pretreatment is necessary before using ABS grade A steel plate. Pre-treatment including shot blasting and painting with shop primer. Some shipyards have their own shot blasting and painting lines but some not. BBN steel set up two pre-treatment lines for shipbuilding steel plate seperately in Shanghai and Tianjin port for giving customers' one-stop services.
