ABS grade A steel plate is commonly used in shipbuilding with general strength. ABS grade A steel plate is mainly used to build ship body and hull structures. Generally speaking, air rolling and controlled rolling are feasible for ABS grade A steel plate with equal and less than 40 mm thickness. For ABS grade A steel plate with thickness greater than 40 mm, heat treatment is normalized or TMCP. These two processes can improve the yield strength and tensile point of ABS grade A steel plate.

Generally pretreatment is necessary before using ABS grade A steel plate. Pre-treatment including shot blasting and painting with shop primer. Some shipyards have their own shot blasting and painting lines but some not.
