Despite the relaxation of the blockade and restriction measures, the apparent consumption of EU steel in the second quarter of 2020 still dropped significantly (- 24.4%) compared with the same period last year, and continued to decline (- 10.4%) in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the apparent consumption of EU steel increased by 3.3% year on year to 35.2 million tons.
In 2020, the delivery volume of iron and steel enterprises in the EU decreased by 9.7% year-on-year, which is the second year of continuous decline in the delivery volume of iron and steel enterprises in the EU, and it decreased by 4.2% year-on-year in 2019.
It is expected that the apparent consumption of steel in the EU will rebound by 11.7% in 2021 and increase by 4.9% in 2022. By then, due to the continuous improvement of the demand of steel industry, the apparent consumption level of steel in the EU is expected to return to the level of 2017.
